How much does it cost to register an electric vehicle?

A big boost to the electric mobility momentum has been given Indian Government. The rate of EVs running on the road is increasing every year drastically. n FY 2020, EV sales for two-wheelers in India increased by 21 per cent. For EV buses, the sales for the same period increased by 50 per cent. Along with the 2 wheelers many commercial and private 4-wheelers are now electric. Electric 3-wheelers are seen running on Indian roads at a large scale. It is often a question: “How much does it cost to register an electric vehicle?”. Today let us see what is the procedure and cost for registration of an electric vehicle.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has issued a notification to exempt the registration and renewal fees of the registration certificates and assignment of the new registration marks for Battery operated Vehicles. on August 2, 2021. Presently, registration certificate/renewal charges range from Rs 1,000 – 1,500 for passenger vehicles and Rs 300 for two-wheelers. But for electric vehicles it is free.

The Annual Road Transport report of 2019 says “Motorcycles run on electricity: exempted from payment of tax, Cars, vans run on electricity: exempted from payment of tax”. Electric Vehicle come with a registration mark exhibited on a number plate with a Green background. On the other hand, Road tax needs to be paid by an individual buying a vehicle.

RTO Rules for Electric Vehicles Registration in India

The following are defined as electric bicycles and are exempted for any registrations and transport rules are not applicable.

  • One or more electric motor with the power of less than 250W.
  • The maximum speed of 25 kilometers per hour.

Required Document for EV Registration:

  • Identity Proof
  • Address Proof
  • Proof of ownership of vehicle

Is Driving License necessary to drive an EV?

According to the RTO Rules for electric vehicles in India, a driver’s license is a proof of persons ability to drive a vehicle. Without them, a person has no right to drive a vehicle on public roads, thus protecting the roads from abuse and improper drivers. Hence driving license is mandatory. However, vehicles with a top speed of less than 25 km/h or a maximum output of 250 W do not require a driving license.

Do you need a Number Plate to Drive Electric Vehicle?

The license plate regulations mention that all vehicles registered after April 1, 2019, must have a high-security license plate (HSRP). The government issues these license plates to help prevent the theft of vehicles. They also helped create a digital database of nationally registered vehicles. The green license plates help road officials identify electric vehicles to facilitate parking, free access to densely populated areas and reduce tolls.
